1989 Porsche 911 Carrera C4 Rauh Welt Edition | RWB | When it comes to modifying cars, enthusiasts typically skew one way or the other- building up their car for driving excitement or changing it around for looks and style- the two rarely go together. This 1989 Carrera 4 Rauh Welt Edition, is an exception to that rule. The brainchild of Tokyo-based racer turned customizer Akira Nakai, Rauh-Welt Begriff took the automotive world by storm with their unique brand of modified 911. With a loose tie back to the 934 and 935 race cars of the 1970s and 1980s, RWB’s signature style features massively flared fenders, filled out by ultra deep dish wheels, a multi-piece bodykit that addresses the bumpers side skirts and a massive multi-level rear spoiler as well as suspension that slams the car to the ground. It can take years to get a build slot for an RWB and when your name comes up, Nakai himself comes from Japan to install the body himself. This makes for some of the most aggressive looking 911s on the road and a car that gets looks everywhere you go- but frequently isn’t paired with a more potent engine-but that is not something that can be said for this car. Watch the Walk around Video posted The 964 Carrera was a quick car stock- with a 3.6-liter Flat-6, they produced 247 horsepower and could take the car from 0-60 in under 6 seconds but that wasn’t going to cut it with a car that looks like this. To address this, the motor was pulled out for a complete rebuild and the addition of a custom single turbo kit, built by the forced induction experts at Bisimoto Engineering in Los Angeles. The rebuild consisted of a new set of TK/JE custom lightweight turbo pistons, APR Racing cylinder head studs and connecting rod bolts and a new timing chain, as well as a full top end rebuild. To support the turbo kit, a wideband 02 sensor was added along with a Turbosmart wastegate and 50mm blow off valve, a Garrett Intercooler and custom 1000cc injectors all help keep the car happy during boost. Thanks to all of these modifications, this 964 now puts down 402 horsepower and 393 lb-ft of torque “ATW” at the wheels on pump gas and is perfectly streetable when you want it to be. To keep up with the power, a Spec clutch and flywheel were added. Given that all wheel drive wasn’t available on the 911 Turbo until the 993 generation, this is sure to be one of the fastest AWD 964s out there. Before Nakai set to work on this 964, it started life as a stock, Guards Red Carrera 4. The owner at the time was smart to start with a very clean example as it made everything that followed easier and this car still retains all of its service history back to 1989. But in 2015, after the bodywork was completed, the car needed a fresh coat of paint. For that, it was sent to world famous body shop LT Motorwerks in El Monte, California where it was painted in manufacturer specification BASF Glassurit Paint in the original shade of Guards Red. There are some RWBs out there that look great in photos but up close, you can tell that fresh paint and bodywork after the fact was not a high priority – that is clearly not the case with this car. Thanks to the top quality presentation, the car was brought to and shown at SEMA in 2016. The RWB is fitted with a set of Forgestar multi-piece wheels that offset the red very nicely, with semi-gloss black centers and brushed lips with a charcoal clear coat. Sized 18×11″ in front and 18×13.5″ in the rear, the car rolls on a set of Pirelli Corsa tires with staggering 265/35/18 front and 335/30/18 rear size. The suspension was modified with a set of KW V3 coilovers to drop it to the ground, while still offering adjustability and the brakes have also been upgraded with 993 Turbo calipers in front and 993 Carrera brakes in the rear. To add to the race car feel of this RWB, the interior was stripped out and a custom roll cage built by Unique Fabrications has been fitted and is painted a matched shade of Guards Red. The stock seats were replaced with Momo Supercups upholstered in black leather and Schroth Racing harnesses were installed for track duty. In the rear, the back seats were removed and replaced with an RS carpet kit and a Momo Mod 7 steering wheel with custom RWB horn insert have also been installed. To cap off the interior, the glove box was autographed by the artist himself Akira Nakai. Customizing Porsche 911s is nothing new, people have been doing it almost since the car came out- but there are few out there with the presence on the road that an RWB possesses. There aren’t many chances to acquire one of these ultra special cars for your collection and this is certainly one of the best out there.
